The United States federal closure has now reached its 36th day, making it the most prolonged duration of government closure in the nation's history.

This closure, which started on 1 October, was caused by Congress's inability to agree on a new funding deal. It has left federal employees missing salaries and countless citizens lacking essential services.

Political parties have been deadlocked for weeks with no indications of agreement - although some glimmers of hope are beginning to show.

"My feeling is, based on my gut of how these things operate, I think we're approaching an off-ramp here," the Senate's top Republican commented.

The previous government shutdown record happened under President Trump's first term and continued for 35 days before it ended in the year 2019.

Increasing Impacts on Americans

Over recent weeks following the shutdown's start, the effects on ordinary citizens have worsened.

Thousands of government employees have already missed their salaries, and there are growing fears about disruptions in aviation nationwide as flight controllers and airport employees work without pay.

"If you bring us to a week from today, Democrats widespread disruption," a transportation official warned. "You will see extensive flight delays. There will be mass cancellations, and we might need to close certain parts of the airspace, since we cannot properly operate because we lack sufficient air traffic control staff."

Nutrition Benefits Crisis

The impacts have also been felt by economically vulnerable citizens who depend on government services.

Approximately 12.5% of Americans are dependent on nutrition benefits from the SNAP program, but only a portion of these benefits is being paid out currently due to lapsed funding.

The former president's team had - initially - said no food assistance money would be distributed in the month of November but a US court ordered that contingency funds be allocated to give people some assistance.

"[Snap benefits] will be provided only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before," the former president wrote on his preferred platform.

Political Stalemate

Members of the American Senate have voted on the same temporary budget measure to reopen the government more than a dozen times with no luck. Attempts were made once more recently to without success.

That proposal passed the lower chamber in the previous month.

The opposition party have so far declined to back the short-term measure on government funding except if the majority party agreed to extend healthcare subsidies for low-income Americans. The governing party have opposed this, claiming their counterparts of using government operations as leverage over unrelated policy priorities.

"Without observing some progress or indications of that by at least the middle of this week, it's hard to see completing anything by the end of the week," the legislative leader informed journalists. "In my view that represents the objective here, which is attempting and get something that we could send back to the House that would restart the federal operations."

In recent days, there have been signs that some moderate Democrats and governing party members are keen to discuss and find a deal before Thanksgiving on November 27th.
