This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Aims to Curb the Influence On Resellers
To celebrate the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators and the Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring special merchandise. Enthusiasts will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, though, will be a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. The store is scheduled from on-site at the museum to its web counterpart from January 26 to April 19.
The Book That Inspires the Partnership
Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated volume packed with beautiful illustrations that show creatures in their wild environments. The concept like what a Pokémon Professor could produce after trainers submit their data, alternatively what Charles Darwin could have sketched had the famous islands teemed with flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal lies in the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.
What Makes This Special Card Stand Out
It is common to issue to release cards for major tournaments and crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards often feature the iconic mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this new promotion apart however, is the unusually large dimensions. While precise specs have not been immediately shared, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with customers limited to just one card with each transaction.
Limiting Reseller Activity
Per an official statement, some of the pop-up items may also be available beyond the institution itself. However, a wider release is slated for specific stores within the UK. Importantly, fans will not be able to purchase the card through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, it appears they will have trouble stockpiling large numbers this time around. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to the Windy City in the coming months.
"All profits from purchases made in the Museum shop and its web shop, which covers these items, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists who are scientific inquiry and finding answers to the global ecological crisis," the statement says.
