Prison Surprise: Brazil's Ex-President Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and the legal system prevailed.

A couple of months subsequent to receiving a 27-year sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro finally looks destined for incarceration.

Expected Incarceration

The found-guilty coup-monger – who had been under home confinement in his estate while a series of judicial steps and challenges play out – is largely predicted to be imprisoned in the near future, amid growing rumors that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security prison.

Previous Remarks on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the right-wing ex- military man displayed minimal mercy for Brazil’s inmates.

“Why should we offer those scoundrels a comfortable existence?” he once pondered. “They ought to simply be fucked, end of story. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to finish there, the only thing required is not sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Jail Destination Discussion

But the possibility of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, a group of four this week toured the prison in an apparent effort to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was one of the visitors, said he anticipated the septuagenarian figure to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe digestive problems – the consequence of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 political campaign – implied it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to manage if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the standard of jail cuisine.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells holding 40 inmates: “That’s virtually one meter squared per detainee.

“We talked to the prisoners and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful food,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

The senator isn't the sole person expressing views prior to the ex-leader's anticipated detention.

Writing in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” finale to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its history”.

“It is an unfairness that gnaws the hearts of millions Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Reaction

It is possibly true considering the significant following Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his predicted jailing has also warmed the spirits of millions other people who think he ought to be jailed for planning to stop his successor from taking power – and also plotting to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in a hole. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive respectful treatment – but proper treatment behind bars. He cannot carry on being his personal jailer for his whole life.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the harsh treatment of prisoners, had unexpectedly woken up to their rights. “Just now has the far-right – which has always asserted that human rights were not for lawbreakers – decided to tour a jail to discover what circumstances are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, demeaning treatment”.

Potential Incarceration Conditions

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his more likely location seems to be a nearby jail for police officers and other “particular” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are far more adequate than those in the primary facility, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

As per reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha has about 24 square meters – about the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 square meter WC with a shower and a 130 square foot balcony. “The ex-president might be permitted to have a TV and also a cooler in his room as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report suggested.

Political Reactions

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about proposal to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a form of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his fate in the {
