Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
