Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released video stills Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
