Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

They also requested that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was prevented because it failed to get the support of the military leaders. Lula was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
