Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, encompassing one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
