Gavin Newsom States He Is Considering a White House Bid in 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he will determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 elections are over.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom stated when pressed about seriously considering a campaign for president after the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I'm not."

Newsom's time in office as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he cautioned that any choice is still years away.

"Fate will determine that," he said.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his digital presence and pushing a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary disclosed a strategy to pull government money from California and warned suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an unauthorized trucker that caused three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which allowed him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

Duffy had previously indicated he was withholding $40 million from the state for failing to implement language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp national statutes," Newsom's office retorted in a last month's comment addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with more commercial holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has risen to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an mean of over 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, Newsom stated while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The idea that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, in and of itself, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
