Far-Right Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile New Leader.
In a decisive second-round vote, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Victory
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third presidency, having earlier been beaten by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Noted for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to tackle rising crime and radically curb migration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he issued an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face deportation.
His plans featured Trump-inspired measures such as constructing camps, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost border.
Amid a Continental Trend
Several commentators view Kast's success as aligning with a broader right-wing trend in South America, similar to recent electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further describe it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Clear Mandate
In spite of his sweeping electoral win, Kast does not command an overall majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if all right-leaning parties are counted together.
This legislative situation could complicate his plans, such as a pledge to reduce public spending by billions within 18 months—a plan for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"We have many aspects about what a Kast government will look like that are uncertain because he has not explained his methods for do them," said a political expert.
The professor added, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures typical of the right-wing. But where there is much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
