The progressive congressional candidate, a left-leaning hopeful running for the House of Representatives, faces federal charges over allegations stemming from her participation during demonstrations outside an ICE processing facility near Chicago in September.

Details of the Indictment

Federal court documents, filed last week, allege that the 26-year old American of Palestinian descent political figure and five other individuals “physically hindered and impeded” a federal agent that was “forced to drive at an extremely slow rate of speed” to avoid injuring any of the conspirators.

The candidate, who is running for Illinois’s ninth congressional district, faces counts of plotting to obstruct a federal officer as well as assaulting or impeding the agent while they were performing official duties.

Alleged Actions During Protest

As stated in court papers, the group “planned together with others” to stop through intimidation and force, Agent A, from performing official tasks.

Prosecutors claim that Abughazaleh, along with the other individuals, “banged aggressively” on the agent’s vehicle, “gathered closely around the front and side” of the car and “pressed on the car to block its progress”.

According to the indictment that the group etched the word “pig” on to the vehicle and damaged a side mirror and rear wiper.

Additionally, it is claimed the candidate in particular “positioned herself with others in front of the official car”, and with her hands on the hood braced her body and hands against the vehicle while staying directly in the car’s way, obstructing and blocking the agent.

Defendant’s Statement

Following the indictment, the congressional candidate, recognized for her substantial online following, called the indictment “political prosecution”.

“This is a … gross attempt at silencing dissent, a right protected under the first amendment. These charges are part of a pattern by the current administration to outlaw protest and penalize vocal critics. That is the reason I will contest these unfair allegations,” she stated.

She continued: “While we were practicing our First Amendment rights, immigration officers have struck, pulled, thrown, fired pepper balls at, and used tear gas on numerous demonstrators, including me. Merely because we dared to assert that hooded individuals seizing our neighbors and frightening our community should not become routine.

“This prosecution aims at our freedoms to demonstrate, express opinions, and connect with those who oppose government actions … Throughout my career, I have resisted the nation’s regression toward authoritarianism, and I will not stop now,” she added.

Broader Context

The indictment comes as the Trump administration ramps up federal immigration raids across numerous progressive cities including Chicago – a move which has been harshly criticized by local and state leaders.

These operations have faced broad resistance from citizens, Democratic members of Congress, and advocacy organizations, including the ACLU characterizing them as an expansion of a national paramilitary force intended to strengthen executive authority.
