Correctional Facilities Won't Be Fixed Immediately, Minister Says, while Law Enforcement Hunt For Two Individuals Incorrectly Released
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick has described the circumstances as a "complete and utter mess," commenting earlier today.
Speaking during a radio program, he pointed to remarks made by David Lammy following a previous inmate discharge, saying that the minister would establish stricter verifications.
"There was a delay of almost a week for the prison service supposedly to even become aware this has happened" and inform the authorities, Jenrick says, "who are now a week behind in the search to locate him."
The opposition figure criticises the minister's performance during yesterday's PMQs and accuses him of a "complete dereliction of duty."
Addressing incorrect inmate discharges more generally, the spokesperson emphasizes that "every single mistaken discharge [...] is unforgivable."
He acknowledges there were such releases under the former administration, but says the figure "has risen significantly" under Labour.
Advocating additional correctional facilities to be built, he adds: "What the British people expect now are proper checks implemented."
"This represents a specific bureaucratic error by the Ministry of Justice overseen by David Lammy," the opposition member concludes.
