Canada's Blue Jays Secure World Series Meeting Against defending champion Dodgers
George Springer contributed to the Astros securing the championship in 2017.
Toronto's Blue Jays earned a spot in their first Fall Classic following 1993 by overcoming the Mariners in the final game seven of the ALCS.
Behind 3-1, Springer delivered a three-run blast in the seventh frame, guiding the only Canadian franchise in Major League Baseball to a four games to three victory in the best-of-seven series. They will now face the Los Angeles Dodgers, holders of the reigning title, in the upcoming championship.
"I'm just so happy for everyone here, our city, Canada," said Springer, a key player of the Astros team that claimed the 2017 championship. "This is such an amazing experience."
George Springer has now hit twenty-three playoff homers, placing him third in history behind Manny Ramirez (twenty-nine) and Altuve (twenty-seven).
"There's probably not anyone else on planet Earth that I'd prefer in that situation except for Springer with his October magic," remarked manager John Schneider.
The Mariners, despite leading the early in the series, are still the only MLB franchise never to appear in a Fall Classic.
Manager Dan Wilson said "certainly that it hurts" after his side's defeat at Toronto's Rogers Centre, but praised their efforts this season.
"It's a special team. Unfortunately that we had to come out on the wrong side of the series," he remarked.
Toronto secured the title on their two prior appearances in 1992 and 1993, and will welcome the Dodgers in game one on Friday.
