Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes less than a month after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a true visionary whose influence on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
